watts, 40 years later

today is the 40 year anniversary of the watt's riots/revolt. to commemorate the day, the latimes has this fascinating, rashomon-like account from nine eyewitnesses, including the arresting officer and woman who was arrested that started it all.

This was a great article (I read it yesterday). It was so much more touching and informative than some stuffy commemorative piece written in "objective" news-speak. What I also found interesting was the side bar with the demographics of the neighborhood comparing then to now (I'm not sure if it's in the online version). It showed that the unemployment rates are slightly higher today and the home ownership rates are slightly lower. So much for progress.
