monday media
some links from this weekend on architecture, LA and other bits of randomness:- the new york times magazine is devoted to modernist design and preservation. one article of interest for LA: Saving the Tract House on efforts to designate Balboa Highlands in the valley a historic district, particularly a section of Eichler tract houses.
- the latimes covers the search for LA's next planning chief. the article is chock full of interesting stats on the city and historical detail. one glaring omission: the article discusses the growth of car-based culture, claiming people's preference for the car led to the disuse of the public transportation syetm, ignoring the concerted effort by the nascent car industry to systematically buy and then dismantle the trolley system.
- and newsweek gets around to covering thom mayne. the article is basically a retread of a new york times magazine piece from a few months ago. child of the sixties, blah blah blah, rebel anarchist yadda yadda yadda, goverment commissions, etc etc etc.
